Today Sean (my boyfriend) and I went to explore and hike around Machimoodus State Park in Moodus, CT. It is a great place to go hiking, gorgeous area! It is known for being “haunted” and hikers have told stories about strange noises and events while hiking in the area. While there you will find an abandoned barn that was so strongly built it could still be used today! On the northern end of the park you begin to walk into another state park, Sunrise Resort State Park. This park is the home of the once widely known Sunrise resort that once brought in thousands of vacationers each year. It now lays abandoned yet not deserted as people can be found hiking, walking their dogs, or fishing along the Moodus River. The building still stand but are slowing deteriorating due to time and weather. We only explored for about 20 minutes because we were not sure if it was illegal to go there. Now, after researching after returning home, we no it is open to the public. Therefore we will be visiting again this Monday and I will be taking MANY more pictures!!! I will be posting pictures of today’s adventures soon!!

Today I sat at work, a slow day as usual for a Sunday, and started reading this month’s O Magazine (Oprah’s Magazine) and came across an article about the photographer, James Griffioen, and his collection of photographs (pg. 163) that capture nature taking back abandoned homes in Detroit, Michigan. Griffioen, a local photographer in Detroit, goal is to take pictures of these homes to show how nature is reclaiming what we have taken from it. The main picture shown is of a white three story home (An almost hidden brick chimney is seen in the back) that has long been abandoned. It shows vines and bushes creeping along its walls, covering it in a blanket of luscious green foliage. What was probably once a beautiful home has now become a wildlife paradise where plants can grow freely and animals can roam. It may be a forgotten building but I look at this photograph and see beauty, natural beauty. The photographs beautifully capture nature and man-made structure all at once and it is a true work of art. Attached is one of these amazing photos (To find more visit 20×200.com). I strive to be a photographer and to capture all the beauty, natural and artificial, in the world and this is a true example of how another has done just this. I can learn a lot from the works of James Griffioen.
